Flip Flops: If You Really Knew Me
If you really knew me, you wouldn’t think of me as something to wear when you’re in a rush, you wouldn’t make me some cheap plastic shoe. Instead, you would make me elegant, only for important occasions. , I would not be a substitute for when you don’t want your other shoes to get ¨messy¨. Although I appear to be simple, I have a vivid history of many places and people and even though I look flashy and cheap now, it wasn’t always like this, I used to be a sign of both elegance and strength.
I am more popular than you think, as of September 24th 2014, 679,946 tags on Instagram. How’s that for popular. I’m sure you must have heard of me-I mean- a bunch of celebrities have spoken about me on Twitter, even some Teen Choice Award winners like YouTuber Tyler Oakley (tyleroakley).
Though my popularity is strong, I also have a job to keep my popularity up. You may have heard my name in a couple of films and television advertisements. I’m in almost every movie that has a beach scene, pool, or any show that has a place to swim.
I currently live in the United States as an inexpensive rubber sole with breakable bands holding me together. Way back then, in the good old days, I used to be a sandal, the shoes of powerful Greek and Roman warriors instead of just something you wear because of my cheapness. I was the original footwear design, the first shoe in the world. I was soon adopted by Japan. They changed me. I went from a complex series of straps to just one ¨Y¨ shaped strap. They gave me a new name as well, they called me zori. Soon, in 1972, after World War II, The Americans brought me back to their home. I remained without a name for quite a while, or should I say, I had many names- just not a proper, official one, until one day when they put me in the dictionary, they made my name an onomatopoeia. I was called flip flops. The sound I make when you walk in me. How creative. I wish I was not known for my simplicity, but my elegance like when I was in early Europe. Americans were alarmingly late with shoe fashion. I have existed in the sixteenth century and they learned about me three-hundred years later. I used to be the footwear of warriors, now I’m just a casual, uncostly piece of plastic with a bad name, nauseating colors and ridiculous patterns.
If you really knew me, you would know that I am more than just a piece of footwear that has traveled around the world time and time again. I was the original shoe and that all of the other shoes evolved and developed from me like slang. Slang is an idea formed from another that moved and evolves with the people who carry it.
